Your challenge

Based in 5 locations across Canada, the Aerospace portfolio builds collaborative project teams from a diverse scientific and engineering workforce with particular strengths in structures, materials, manufacturing, aerodynamics, gas turbines and flight research. Projects are conducted to meet the requirements of external clients, internal investment programs, or both.

Current areas of investment in aerospace technologies include future aircraft and power systems, life cycle management, manufacturing and automation, civil UAS, cockpit and cabin technologies.

The Director, Research and Development manages the capability embodied in assigned portfolio resources, ensuring relevance, focus and utility by working with program leaders and external stakeholders, including clients. The Director supervises Team Leaders to achieve effective governance of project management and continuous professional development of staff. Through discharging these responsibilities, and through the provision of timely strategic advice, the Director, Research and Development provides the General Manager with vital assurance of long-term portfolio sustainability and risk management.

Screening criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:


Graduate degree in science, engineering or business from a recognized university. Preference may be given to candidates with a combination of science/engineering and business education.


In-depth knowledge of the Canadian and international context around Aerospace portfolio technologies: industries, forums, trends, the issues and dynamics that impact them, and the engagement needed to keep this knowledge current.

Business knowledge within the relevant scientific and technological domains gained through experience with industry, government or other partnerships.

Experience supervising and developing staff in multidisciplinary teams, ideally in a matrix environment of projects and programs.

Recently demonstrated and confident grasp of principles, tools and practices for administrative, financial, and human resource management.

Salary range

  • From $119,100 to $142,900 per annum.
