We are looking for a vibrant and dynamic Mechanical Technologist to support our HAA Research Centre. The Mechanical Technologist would be someone who shares our core values of impact, accountability, leadership, integrity and collaboration.
A Mechanical Technologist is required to assist in the design, prototyping, fabrication, assembly, test and integration of world-class astronomical instrumentation for the international Gemini 8 metre telescopes, Canada France Hawaii Telescope, and future large telescope projects, including the Thirty Meter Telescope.
Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:
Diploma from a 2400 Hour Mechanical Engineering Technology Diploma Program or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Significant and recent experience designing in 3D CAD parametric solid-modelling environments, preferably with the Autodesk Inventor Series software.
Significant experience in the drafting of complex precision mechanical components/mechanisms preferably for scientific instrumentation.
Experience using Autodesk Vault for management of hierarchical CAD files is an asset.
Experience in fabrication, assembly, and commissioning of precision equipment, in particular scientific instrumentation.
Experience in the preparation of technical documentation.

An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
Condition of employment
Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
Working knowledge of the fundamental design principles and analytical tools needed for mechanical design.
Working knowledge of 3D parametric computer aided design software (preferably recent versions of Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks) for creating complex assemblies and parts.
Working knowledge of mechanical drafting procedures and practices.
Knowledge of machine shop equipment, fabrication procedures and techniques, and commercially available components for precision instrumentation.
Working knowledge of the fabrication and assembly of thermally controlled enclosures, ideally with composite panel construction, is an asset.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and to execute substantial project tasks while handling several roles and task assignments.
Demonstrated ability to evaluate and analyze designs and equipment to confirm that it will meet specifications.
Demonstrated ability to efficiently produce clear, well-structured and well-written technical documentation.
